When higher protein levels are required

To meet the increased protein, vitamin and mineral demands of the pregnant and lactating mare and growing foal. Milk & Grow Pellet is a high quality protein supplement rich in the most often deficient amino acid, L-Lysine.  This is a highly digestible protein with favorable profiles for all the essential amino acids combined with a complete spectrum of vitamins, minerals, and Probiotics.

A heavily pregnant mare has a 128% increase in her calorie requirements, but 141% in her protein needs.  When she is in heavy lactation, her calorie needs jump by 190% but her protein needs by a whopping 243%.  A weanling foal has similarly high protein requirements compared to calories.

When the horse eats protein, it is broken down to amino acids during digestion, which are then absorbed and reassembled into protein inside the horse.  The quality of a protein is a function of both its digestibility and the amino acid profile.  The protein in Milk & Grow combines the highest quality vegetable protein with nature's perfect protein, whey, which further reinforces and guarantees the important amino acids L-Lysine and Methionine are provided.

Milk & Grow also includes significantly potent levels of vitamins, minerals and Probiotics.

  • The fat soluble vitamins A, D and E support bone health, Calcium metabolism, and help reduce oxidative stress.
  • The water soluble B-complex vitamins support the basic metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.  These vitamins also support stress response and recovery, and supply important nutrition for the developing nervous system, including the brain.
  • The trace minerals, particularly Zinc, Copper, Manganese, Iron, Silicon, Cobalt, Iodine, and Selenium play important roles in the development and protection of the bones, joints, and connective tissues.  These nutrients are also involved in the reduction of oxidative stresses, as well as supplying the basic trace mineral reserves for these tissues.
  • The macro-minerals, Calcium, Magnesium, and Phosphorus play crucial roles in bone development, formation, and maturation.
  • Probiotics support immune function, nutrient absorption, and help prevent the build-up of harmful microorganisms

The importance of high quality protein.

If all the water is removed from the horse's body, most of what is left is protein.  Even tissues that wouldn't necessarily classify as protein like bones, tendons, and ligaments, have a significant amount of protein and amino acids inherent in their base structure.  Enzymes are proteins, as are many hormones.

From the time a mare's egg is fertilized, amino acids are required to build the proteins in the foal's body.  Proteins are strings of amino acids assembled as ordered by the foal's DNA.  These amino acids cannot be manufactured from other parts of a horse’s body.  These building materials for proteins must be provided in the pregnant mare’s or growing foal's diet.
