A palatable Phosphorus supplement for horses.

Equi-Phos is for horses with a need for palatable, low-sugar Phosphorus supplementation for energy and bone support because of inadequate dietary levels that may result in lethargy, poor appetite or milk production.  The suggested minimum trial period is 10 days (for palatability).  The need is based on total dietary level (meeting minimum intake requirements), as well as the Calcium to Phosphorus ratio (adult between 6 to 1 and 2 to 1; growth 2 to 1 to 1 to 1.)

Phosphorus is a mineral with a wide variety of functions in the equine body.  Both the total amount and the ratio of Calcium to Phosphorus are important, and imbalances are very common.  Plain grains and brans have an abundance of Phosphorus, but commercial products add Calcium to reach target Calcium to Phosphorus ratios.  Most hays have adequate to abundant Calcium, but borderline to low Phosphorus and high Calcium to Phosphorus ratio, causing ratios low in Phosphorus.

Feed at the rate of 1-3 oz. daily when additional dietary phosphorus is required. Consult your equine nutritionist. 1 scoop = 1 oz. (included)

20 lb. pail = 53-160 day supply

Dietary needs for Phosphorus are very well established and supplementation should be done before there are symptoms, which are largely irreversible.  Early symptoms may show as poor weight gain, lethargy, weakness and joint discomfort.

Many common hays require from 5 to even 10 grams of Phosphorus supplementation per day.  This can be determined by nutritional analysis of hay or forage, or based on average area analyses.

Unfortunately, Phosphorus is not a very palatable mineral.  To overcome this difficulty, Equi-Phos is formulated with an appealing base, but without a high sugar content.  Consult a nutritionist regarding Phosphorus needs in your individual situation.

  • Phosphorus, in combination with Calcium as a compound called Hydroxyapatite, gives bone its strength.  While most of the body's Phosphorus is tied up in bone, free Phosphorus serves important functions in each and every cell of the body.
  • Phosphorus as Phosphate combines with fats to form Phospholipids, which are the major constituent of the membranes surrounding cells. All energy storage in cells is in the form of Phosphate bonds in Creatine Phosphate (muscle only) and ATP (all cells).
  • Phosphorus is also an important regulator. By a process called phosphorylation, Phosphate molecules attach to sites on enzymes, cell-signaling molecules and hormones to activate them.
  • Phosphorus is contained in the molecules that make up DNA and RNA, is involved in the buffering of acidity within cells, and as the compound 2,3-DPG, facilitates delivery of oxygen bound hemoglobin to the cells.
