Question: I was told you have different mineral supplements for horses by region of the US. What would you suggest for horses in central Arkansas?

Dr. Kellon: Many things go into the choice of the best supplement, including age, use, what is being fed in addition to hay or pasture, and other supplements being used.
There is information available on average mineral composition of forages in the United States.  Choosing a supplement based on this is much better than picking one blindly, but hay analysis is always the best way to go when possible because of the individual variations within a region.

For your area of the country, U-Balance Foundation is the best fit.  At a dose of 1 scoop/day it is a good fit for your regional averages.  If you begin to see issues with coat bleaching or poor hoof quality that can be increased to 2 scoops/day.
