Question: Can I use GUT along with Devils Claw Plus? I just wondered if there are any interactions I should be worried about. Thanks!

Dr Kellon: Yes, you can use them together. No interactions would be anticipated. I should mention you may read that Harpagophytum procumbens (Devil's Claw) can cause or worsen gastrointestinal ulcers. This is based on its classification as a "bitter" which traditionally are believed to improve digestion. This has apparently been interpreted to mean that it can cause secretion of stomach acid, but there are no studies confirming this effect. In carefully conducted human studies the rate of side effects with Devil's Claw is no different from people who are taking a placebo. Mild gastrointestinal effects are most frequently reported but, again, this is the same as with placebo and is the most common side effect reported for any herbal or drug. I personally have never seen a reaction to Devil's Claw in a horse, even horses known to have gastric ulceration.
